What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a holistic health technique that stems from Traditional Chinese Medicine that originated thousands of years ago. It is based on the premise that a blockage or disturbance in the flow of the body's life energy, or “qi,” can cause health issues. In layperson terms, acupuncture stimulates the flow of oxygen, nutrients and blood throughout your body in a way that supports your body's natural ability to heal itself. Acupuncturists insert ultrafine, metal needles to specific acupuncture points throughout the body to restore the flow of qi, balance the body’s energy, stimulate healing, and promote relaxation.

“Does Acupuncture hurt?”

One misconception about acupuncture is that it hurts, and this is a reason that some people don’t want to try acupuncture. Surprisingly, although needles are used in acupuncture, treatments are relatively pain-free though you may experience some sensations during your treatment. This can vary due to your level of pain tolerance and overall sensitivity.

What to expect during Acupuncture treatments?

First, the acupuncturists will speak with the patient about their pain and health-related goals. During your visit, they will usually look at your tongue and press on your vital organs to see if there is anything noticeable contributing to an imbalance.

The acupuncturist will then use sterile, disposable small needles and will place them along specific “meridians” on the body. An acupuncture treatment session lasts between 30 to 90 minutes. A typical treatment involves the insertion of between five and 20 needles. In most cases, the needles will remain in place for 10 to 30 minutes to promote a period of relaxation while the treatment achieves its desired effects.

When the treatment is complete, they will remove the needles, which will be safely discarded as medical waste. Each insertion point may be dabbed with rubbing alcohol, marking the completion of the treatment. After that, patients can go about their day and are usually advised to drink plenty of water in an effort to help the detoxifying process.
